A Three-Part Plea for Peace and the European Ideal by Claus Tröger and Friederike Bernau
Dates
Info
As a prominent German-language author and European, Stefan Zweig championed peace and brotherhood. Based on his letters, a personal portrait emerges that also illustrates the collapse of a world in the 1930s and 1940s. Claus Tröger and Friederike Bernau paint a vivid portrait of his life and thought. “My Three Lives” was Stefan Zweig’s working title for his major work, *The World of Yesterday*. His years of apprenticeship and travel up to the end of World War I, the successful years of Stefan Zweig’s “writing career” in Salzburg, and finally his years in exile in Great Britain, the United States, and Brazil—these form the three major chapters in Stefan Zweig’s biography. Following this structure, the play “Declaracao” paints a vivid panorama of the cultural heyday of the 1880s, through the bitter experiences of World War I, a life dedicated to peace in Europe, and an artistic success story that culminates in the darkest chapter of Austrian history, leading the protagonist into statelessness, speechlessness, and, from depression, to suicide—a pars pro toto version of Austrian history in the words of the poet Stefan Zweig. Concept & Direction: Claus Tröger
