The Seven Deadly Sins: Two sisters from Louisiana are sent by their family on a tour of the United States to earn money for a house. The task is like a test, because they must earn the money by avoiding the seven deadly sins … Brick by brick, will the little house soon be finished?

Gianni Schicchi: After the death of the wealthy Buoso Donati, his greedy relatives gather in Florence. When they learn that he has bequeathed his fortune to a monastery, they call upon the cunning Gianni Schicchi. He impersonates the deceased, dictates a new will, and, without further ado, transfers the most valuable part of the inheritance—Buso’s house—to himself.

Kurt Weill’s *The Seven Deadly Sins* and Giacomo Puccini’s *Gianni Schicchi* both satirize bourgeois morality and greed. In keeping with the popular subject matter, Giacomo Puccini’s fast-paced score incorporates folk-song-like melodies, while Kurt Weill draws on elements of jazz and dance music such as the tarantella, shimmy, and waltz. Combined into a single evening, both works get to the heart of comedy: human failings as the driving force behind storytelling.
