TARANTELLE, FOLLIE, CANTATAS AND CANZONE NAPOLETANE BY ANDREA FALCONIERO, CRISTOFORO CARESANA, PIETRO ANTONIO GIRAMO AND LUIGI ROSSI

In the 17th century, Naples was the capital of music and the cradle of opera and the (southern) Commedia dell'Arte. The famous Neapolitan conservatories fostered the creation of exceptional music, innovative composers and famous castrati. In their program Alla Napoletana, Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L'Arpeggiata immerse themselves in the musical world of the 17th century: Two lovers who have gone mad over their passion lament their torment in a "hospital for lovesickness"; a war breaks out between small and large fish in the Gulf of Naples over an unfaithful sardine; shepherds sing their ninna nannas and tarantellas at the cradle of the infant Jesus; people dance exuberantly in the streets of Naples while virtuoso melodies resound in the palaces. A program as varied, lively and colourful as the city on Vesuvius.
