Erik Satie in a parallel jazz universe
The Viennese ensemble dusha connection takes on the French eccentric Erik Satie and transforms well-known melodies into a contemporary jazz language full of wit, depth and quirky beauty.
Satie, this brilliant loner who earned his living as a pianist in Parisian variety theaters and cabarets, was ridiculed by the academic music scene and allegedly suffered from Tourette's syndrome, provides the template for a musical search for traces between genius and outsiderism. dusha connection follows it with playful seriousness - somewhere between Dadaist gesture and poetic groove.
The result: music that laughs, stumbles, dreams - and sometimes cries. With unconventional rhythms, open sound spaces and a great love of improvisation, a bridge is created between Satie's crazy world and the present, between vaudeville and jazz club, between melancholy and a twinkle in the eye.
And because every good idea can do with a little extravagance, the band expands its classic jazz line-up (piano, double bass, drums, trumpet) to include an instrument that you would hardly expect to find here: the Chinese violin erhu. It brings Far Eastern shades into play - a fine, vibrant counterweight to all the European melancholy.
Actress Alena Baich will present the concert and give a brief introduction to the history of Satie.
Chiaohua Chang - erhu (Chinese violin), Esad Halilovic - percussion, Urs Hager - piano, Clemens Rofner - bass, Nikola Vuković - trumpet, Alena Baich - moderator
