- From a floral wreath to a floral anniversary
Back in the 1920s, the "Weiße Rose" restaurant in Vienna's Prater was the venue for the city of Vienna's flower balls, which were beautifully decorated with flowers. From 1949 to 1955, this flower wreath was held annually in the former "Vargas Dreherpark" in Meidling. The ball gradually developed into a ball and was held in the Sofiensäle from 1958 to 1987. At that time, the flower ball was opened by the State Opera Ballet. Ballet master Ewald Vondrak, from the Vienna State Opera, was very keen to teach the steps and figures of a polonaise to the gardeners of the Vienna City Gardens as well as the gardeners' children and older colleagues.
The Vienna City Gardens' Flower Ball has been held at Vienna City Hall since 1988. In keeping with ESC 2026, the 102nd Flower Ball will be held under the motto "ESC - United by Flowers".
Colorful floral decorations
100,000 flowers will brighten up the ball rooms in City Hall: Whether orchids (Orchidaceae), anthuriums (Anthurium), roses (Rosa), or lilies (Lilium) or carnations (Dianthus) - - bright colors such as pink, orange, green and copper, harmoniously combined with delicate pastel shades.
