Flip Philipp Quintet feat. Bertl Mayer - Joe Zawinul's Early Works A Musical Journey - Sargfabrik
Dates
Info
Flip Philipp dedicates himself to the early compositions of Joe Zawinul and finds new ways to the roots of his music with a very special line-up.
As a pioneering figure in fusion jazz, Joe Zawinul shaped the international music scene like no other. In 1966 - already in New York - he wrote the song Mercy, Mercy, Mercy for the Cannonball Adderly Quintet, which became a soul jazz hit. Zawinul's love of experimentation and his unique sound have inspired numerous musicians and his influence on modern music can still be felt today. Flip Philipp, percussionist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, met Zawinul during a guest appearance that he conducted: "He is simple and totally to the point, listens to everything and tells the musicians what to play, doesn't argue around. He also drank slivovitz the whole evening and was drunk out of his mind, but he played like a god - that was Zawinul magic. He sits down and music sounds that is unique."
Flip Philipp - vipraphone, Klemens Marktl - drums, Clemens Gigacher - bass, Bertl Mayer - harmonica, Paul Pawluk - guitar
